Count Clap Tap™ is a rhythm training method for all musicians to learn to read and perform rhythms while establishing the practice of counting aloud and tapping a foot to maintain time. While the concept is relatively simple, the results are profoundly valuable.
Concept
Counting is directly tied to reading rhythms. Counting is important for subdividing, maintaining time, and interpreting written rhythms. Regardless of the principal instrument, the ability to clap rhythms will result in greater understanding and, ultimately, improved rhythmic integrity. Foot tapping is an age-old practice for maintaining time. Combined with counting and clapping, this practice of keeping the pulse independently of the written rhythms helps to anchor the performance.
SYNKD Rhythm Pack & e-Book
Count Clap Tap is available as a combination rhythmic sequence library (rhythm pack) through the SYNKD app for iOS. The pack is accompanied by a digital book that encompasses all aspects of the method. Every exercise has a corresponding rhythmic sequence within the SYNKD rhythm pack. Students can count, clap, and tap along with the sequences while developing and honing their rhythmic skills.
With 382 guided exercises, Count Clap Tap starts from square one and builds rhythmic fluency through repetition, speech, and movement. Each exercise can be practiced in a variety of ways, combining the actions of counting, clapping, and tapping, in conjunction with SYNKD.
This triple-action approach trains the brain and body to stay in sync — reinforcing steady time, internal pulse, and accurate reading of rhythmic notation. SYNKD keeps students engaged and honest, as a definitive reference point for the sound of the rhythm being performed.
Together, Count Clap Tap and SYNKD create a fully integrated rhythm-training system that brings clarity and confidence to music students of all ages.
“This method builds upon age-old practice concepts while integrating technology to reinforce rhythmic integrity and aid in the learning process” says co-creator and percussion educator Scott Pellegrom. “We wanted to create a method that begins with simple quarter notes and progresses onto mixed note values, odd meters, and other challenging rhythmic material to meet the needs of a wide variety of musicians.”
“There’s truly something in here for musicians at every level,” adds SYNKD founder and Count Clap Tap co-creator Andy Shoniker. “Even experienced musicians may be surprised by the independence required to count a subdivision while simultaneously clapping the written rhythm and tapping the pulse. The result is a more solidified understanding of and ability to read and perform written rhythms.”
